Iranian carpets from Kerman, Shiraz, Kashan, Masshad, Tabriz are very famous in the world for centuries.
All regions of Iran produce rugs for years, and each one has its own originality.
The islamic regime has for a long time banned exporting persian carpets because it regarded them as national treasures.
If there are more and more mechanized rug production, there are always lots of handmade carpets.
There are two kinds of carpets: the kilim, fully woven on a loom, flat and thin, and knotted carpets, made of velvet, knotted on the loom (usually vertical one) .
Mostly made of wool fabric with cotton, they may contain silk that make them more brighter.
The quality of a carpet depends on several parameters:
* the quality of the material (Khorasan wool , angora wool, silk)
* the density of nodes (from 50,000 to 1,200,000 per sqare meter)
* the type of nodes (symmetrical Turkish node, asymmetrical Persian knot giving finer drawing).
TheTurkish knot (1) is symmetrical, it is found on Turkish carpets, Azeri, Kurdish, Iranian Tabriz.
The Persian knot (2) is asymmetrical, it is found in most Iranian, Egyptian, Turkish, Chinese & Indian carpets.
It is more accurate than the turkish one, more dense and therefore allowing thinner design.
Looms are either vertical or horizontal, the former are more precise, the latter are used by nomads as smaller and removable. Vertical threads are the WARP, horizontal threads are the "WEFT". Warp and weft are made of silk, sheep wool, goat wool, cotton. The yarn is wool or silk. The natural colors are best for rendering and duration. They are made from plants and minerals.
Examples: blue: indigo, lapis lazuli, azurite, brown: walnut, tan, yellow: saffron, pomegranate, grapes, red: madder, cochineal, rhubarb, green: indigo saffron, malachite ... The color variations of the same color are due to the result of several different baths for the same color (it's called "Abrash") and it is the guarantee of a traditional process.
